What Is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

If you’ve heard of acupuncture, cupping (ventosa), or herbal tea for "sipon" and wondered what ties it all together — that’s Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM. It’s one of the world’s oldest systems of health practice, and today it’s often used as a traditional, complementary approach alongside modern medical care, not instead of it.

A different way of looking at health

TCM looks at the body as a whole, connected system. Rather than focusing on a single symptom in isolation, it considers your energy, sleep, digestion, and overall balance together. In TCM, health is understood as the smooth, steady flow of qi (pronounced "chee") — your body’s vital energy — through pathways called meridians. When that flow is blocked or uneven, it’s believed to show up as pain, tiredness, poor sleep, or other everyday discomforts.

This is a different framework from Western medicine, which explains the body through anatomy, biochemistry, and diagnostic testing. Neither replaces the other — at MeridianHealth, we see them as complementary lenses on the same goal: helping you feel and function better.

The main therapies under the TCM umbrella

  • Acupuncture — fine, sterile needles placed at specific points to encourage the body to settle and self-regulate.
  • Cupping (ventosa) — gentle suction therapy believed to ease muscle tightness and support circulation.
  • Moxibustion — gentle warmth applied near the skin, traditionally used for areas that feel worse with cold.
  • Gua sha — smooth, guided scraping strokes that release tension in the neck, shoulders, and back.
  • Herbal education — understanding how herbs fit into TCM thinking (see our herbs article — we don’t sell or prescribe herbs at the clinic).

Many patients use these therapies for everyday concerns like muscle and joint discomfort, stress, poor sleep, and general recovery.

Why we pair it with modern medicine

Our TCM specialist is also a family-medicine specialist — trained at the University of the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital (PGH), Manila, and a graduate of the Sydney Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

That combined training means your visit blends an honest, evidence-based medical assessment with traditional options where they may genuinely help — never one instead of proper diagnosis and care.

What a first visit looks like

You’ll start with a real conversation about your history, lifestyle, and goals — not just a quick chart check. From there, our doctor will recommend what’s appropriate for you, whether that’s a therapy, a referral, or simply reassurance. Walk-ins are welcome at our Lubao clinic, though booking ahead saves you the wait.

Is TCM right for you?

TCM is generally considered a gentle, complementary option for many people, but it isn’t a substitute for medical diagnosis or emergency care. If something feels urgent or serious, please see a doctor right away. For everyday wellness support — stress, tension, recovery, general balance — many patients find TCM therapies a comfortable addition to their care.
